Areas of Priorities for 2016 (Prevention Council meeting)

  1. A+ program – There are three volunteers to help with the sewing project. They will meet with the A+ program every Tuesday in April. They can still use volunteers. Deb is going to check to see what projects seniors maybe able to help with the next school year. This will give some lead time to find volunteers.
  2. Trails and parks assessment – Amanda talked with Scott Schman about what the committee was doing. He is interested in the results. The Parks Department already has benches to put in County Parks. The committee will be meeting June 7 at Alpine Park to assess the park for availability and needs for seniors.
  3. Food Drive (June 14-24) – Amanda is finding boxes to put out. There will be flyers on the front of the boxes stating what is needed. The area food pantrys will be called to see what their greatest needs are. Deb is calling Wautoma and Wild Rose area and Judy is checking with Poy Sippi. Amanda will call the others.
  4. Healthy Aging Website – slow going
  5. Community Fair (October) – not discussed
  6. Senior Activities at Waushara-Wautoma Senior Center – not discussed

Increasing members update

Need for a few men on the committee

Talked about having a meeting committee and asking volunteers to help out with one time events.

Trevor update

Amanda will see if Trevor can show his powerpoint to give to meal sites on activities that enhance the brain at the May 16 meeting.

Photovoicing Project

Amanda received an email from Katie Mead, a graduate student inerested in collaboraion with the committee. She would like to give disposable cameras and instructions to 10-20 adults over 65 to take pictures in the community. The pictures would consist of things that help them to engage in physical activity/walking (e.g. walking trail, benches for resting, shade trees) and things that discourage them from physical activity/walking (e.g. busy street, loose dogs, uneven sidewalks). Katie would develop the film and meet with those who took the pictures a few weeks later to talk about them in a focus group. She would also ask the participants to till out two questionnaires. There would be an incentive for being in the study. She would like to complete the study before July. Amanda will keep in touch with Katie and we will discuss at our next meeting.
