Community Poverty Simulation to be Held October 20th

What is it like to work hard and yet never have enough to make ends meet? How might you feel, what would you do if you were faced with the challenges poverty would cause? What would you give up to put a meal on the table, pay the rent, buy medications or put gas in the car? What if the car breaks down or someone in the family gets sick?

Area residents are invited to discover the answers to these and other questions at a community poverty simulation scheduled for October 20, 2010 from 9am-12pm at Grace United Methodist Church, N2133 Southgate Terrace, Wautoma with a luncheon to follow. The poverty simulation and luncheon are sponsored by the Vision 2020 Committee of the Waushara Prevention Council, Inc. with support from the Heart of Wisconsin United Way. Space is limited. Pre-registration is requested by October 13, 2010.

This activity is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low income household trying to survive month to month. The simulation, facilitated by CAP Services lasts approximately three hours. During that time, participants will complete the simulation exercise and discuss the experience, the choices they made to survive and the feelings they experienced during a guided debriefing period. A light lunch will follow.

Poverty is a complex issue that impacts the entire community. Solutions are not simple, but there are solutions that can reduce the impact of poverty in our communities and move individuals and families toward healthy self sufficiency. You can be part of the solution.
